One Piece Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will go on a quarterly break until April, when the next major arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, One Piece will release two seasons every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio states this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime had a half-year break that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to supply viewers with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the anime covering one chapter, with others instead handling one and a half chapters or additional to make up for time.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have numerous side stories, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple at most coming out each annually, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the original work.
