Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.
This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of his transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a detention review on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also petitioned that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.
The plot was prevented because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
